Goofs At the beginning of the film, Milo is seen as a very young kitten, perhaps three weeks old, nursing from his mother. When Otis the puppy scrambles up to their nest in the barn, a curious Milo topples over the side of the nest and the two animals meet for the first time.
Strangely, from the moment he topples out of the nest to the moment when he lands next to Otis, Milo has aged at least a month!

A beautiful film for all ages. Milo and Otis, best friends since birth, grow up on a small farm and lightheartedly enjoy their youth together, having fun with the other animals and playing games, their favorite being hide-and-seek.
One day, Milo finds the perfect hiding spot in a box tied to a pier on the river, but the game turns serious when the box starts to float downriver away from the farm. Otis, loyal friend that he is, runs alongside the box, trying to help Milo, but eventually, the two animals are separated and lost from home. The movie follows the two animals on their quest to reunite and find their way home, as they tumble through exciting adventures and close calls. Directed by Masanori Hata, "Koneko monogatari," to cite the film's original title, was produced and released in Japan in , achieving box office success in the Asian country.
The film made its way to the United States and was released in by Columbia Pictures. The American edition is 76 minutes long, 14 minutes shorter than the Japanese version's 90 minutes. The American version is narrated with charm and enthusiasm by Dudley Moore, who creates distinct characters using nothing more than his voice.
The film works on nearly all levels. Although some heard-hearted adult viewers may find its plot simplistic and its humor childish, we must not forget that the film is, after all, a fable made for children. That the movie speaks to an adult audience with respect and profundity is to its credit and an indication of its brilliance.
The cinematography by Hideo Fujii and Shinji Tomita captures the Japanese countryside beautifully, and the filmmakers show themselves to be masters of color and composition, depicting moments of true beauty such as the gentle trickling of water from a stalactite in a cave.
The film features a gentle instrumental score by Ryuichi Sakamoto that nicely complements the action. The Disney film also features animals in this instance, two dogs and a cat trying to make their way home.
Common Sense says Lovable pet tale about friendship despite differences. Based on our expert review. Based on 45 reviews. Based on 37 reviews. Add your rating. Parents say 45 Kids say Adult Written by heymaiabee January 2, Wish I had read user reviews instead of just Commonsense review!
I REALLY wish CommonSenseMedia's review of this movie had put a lot more emphasis on the "controversial animal cruelty" aspects of this movie- Perhaps it could have encouraged people to read some info about the making of the movie to get the real picture I certainly wish we had done so before selecting this movie based on the 5 stars given by CommonSenseMedia. My 5 year old son enjoyed it thankfully, he is young enough that he didn't grasp the reality of how this was made , but my husband and I were horrified.
Parts of this movie were genuinely upsetting to watch, as it was abundantly clear animals had been tormented in the making of this film. Pretty awful. This review Helped me decide 5. Parent of a 7-year-old Written by anne f November 24, Not recommended While it is a cute tale, the cats used to play Milo clearly were put in harm's way for filming numerous times.
Milo was filmed plummeting off a cliff and going over a waterfall in a box. These scenes were shot from far enough away that we can see that there are not crew members nearby to rescue the cat if need be.
We rented this without realizing the controversy surrounding it. Helped me decide 3. Read my mind 3. Parent of a 3-year-old Written by charlotteargon October 17, Though the different animals and the plot mesmerized my kids, the animals are in constant peril. I can't help but feel bad for the cat and dog Milo and Otis that had to star in this movie. The filmmakers made the dog get into a fight with a bear, a swarm of seagulls attack the cat, and the cat fall from a waterfall as it was inside a box.
The worst scene was when the cat fell from a cliff into the ocean, and my 7-year old son worried about that cat and asked if this was real. Unfortunately, it was a real scene as you can see the cat struggling as it fell into the water. Parent of a 2-year-old Written by JesseCaf March 30, Although that stuff all went over our 3-year-old's head, we won't watch it again.
And they drop the poor cat off a cliff into the ocean Adult Written by RKrieg June 20, Cruelty to animals This film is delightful to watch, until you realize all the cruelty that was certainly in play during the making of it.
Real cats and dogs are depicted suffering and fighting for their lives against real opponents, situations engineered by the filmmakers.
Children listening to the narration will not be aware of what is really going on, but it is obvious to any adult observer -- especially when the kitten is flung off a foot cliff into the ocean, or at the top of a tree trying to evade a snake.
Use your "common sense" and don't support this film. Helped me decide 2. Adult Written by Jennifer S. October 22, No way around the animal cruelty I remember seeing this movie in the theater when I was 5, and I remember being enchanted. Nothing but fond, sweet, innocent memories of a funny narrator and adorable animals. Decades later, I decided to put it on for my kids and relive the magic.
This film is just scene after scene of horrific, REAL animal cruelty. There was no CGI, no creative cutting, they actually and really sic a bear on a dog! This isn't a joke: they put a snake in a small space with a cat and a bunch of kittens, and they filmed it!
They actually threw a live kitten off a cliff! I felt sick to my stomach. We're not even vegetarian or anything, but we have pets and we would never treat them like this! There is just no redeeming this movie. Read my mind 1. Adult Written by nduns March 3, Values in this movie that you could reinforce with your children include friendship, loyalty and courage. This movie could also give you the chance to talk with your children about how baby animals are born and how animals in the wild have to kill other animals for food.
