This year's Karthigai Deepam fell on 8th December The Festival is preceded by three days of ceremonies and concluded by another three days during which the deities are taken out on a float theppam upon the waters of the Ayyankulam tank.

The first day of Karthigai Deepam Festival November 29, begins with the hosting of the flag Dwajaroghanam signifying the commencement of the Festival. At this ceremony Lord Arunachaleswarar is brought out from the Temple and placed in front of the flagpole to witness the proceedings.

The flag is hoisted amongst Vedic chanting and nagaswara music drums and cymbals. Below are Krittika Nakshatra date in Karthigai Deepam is mainly celebrated by Tamil Hindus. It is one of the oldest festivals celebrated by Tamil people. Karthigai Deepam is also called the festival of lights and nowadays is observed as an extension of Deepavali festival with many families doubling the number of lamps at their home, every day from the day of Deepavali until the day of Karthigai Deepam.

Like Deepavali, there is general practice of cleaning homes and decking up houses beautifully with stunning illuminations and multihued 'Kolams' or Rangoli. Lighting traditional oil lamps in the evening after sunset during twilight period is the main event on the day. Karthigai is essentially a festival of lamps. The lighted lamp is considered an auspicious symbol and believed to ward off evil forces and usher in prosperity and joy.

It occurs on the day when the moon is in conjunction with the constellation Karthigai Pleiades. The celebration begins with Dwajarohanam on the day when Nakshatra Uthiraadam prevails at sunrise.

Most of the time, Nakshatra Uthiraadam prevails 10 days before the main Karthigai Deepam day. Karthigai Deepam should not be confused with Bharani Deepam which is inaugural ritual of Karthigai Deepam. Bharani Deepam is done before sunrise at 4 a. Bharani Deepam day falls one day before or on the same day of Karthigai Deepam.

Bharani Deepam is lit inside the temple premises when Bharani Nakshatra prevails.
