Go Outdoors Florida! Feeding Habits: Feed primarily on plankton and small organisms living in or on bottom detritus; three most common foods consumed in Lake Alice and Lake George were diatoms, green algae, and detritus; dominant food items in stomachs of fish from Six-Mile Creek near Tampa were detritus, algae, diatoms, and plant material. Grow rapidly for first few months, then slow somewhat but ultimately reach pounds by age yrs; fish weighing pounds common; largest caught in Florida weighed 10 pounds and measured over 21 inches in length; Lake Lena fish yielded a maximum age of 6 years, and indicated that males were larger at each age than females.
Not normally known for their angling quality. The exception being some urban anglers catch these in ponds using small pieces of hot dogs, bread balls, dog food, or live worms; no bag or size limits. They are rarely caught on artificial lures. There is also a group of avid bow anglers that target this species. White flaky meat with a mild flavor; considered excellent eating, and farm-raised fish often sold in grocery stores.
Big Catch minimum: longer than 18 inches or heavier than 5 pounds. Blue tilapia are a conditional species in Florida Skip to main content. Report Issues Report fish kills, wildlife emergencies, sightings, etc.
Tilapia farmers become very busy at this time. Beware of the rapidly rising water temperatures, most especially in heavily stocked ponds with larger fish, as the rate at which the algae and microbes break down the fish wastes often does not keep pace with the increase in feed being consumed, potentially resulting in water pollution and poor fish health.
Summer is about maintaining optimal production levels across breeding, growth, feeding, water quality, stock density and harvesting for sale. Attention to detail is needed to ensure that the fish grow optimally and feed is not wasted during this season.
Watch out for low oxygen levels in heavily stocked ponds, especially in non-aerated ponds after consecutive cloudy, windless days. Autumn sees the water cooling, spawning stops, growth again slows and the farming tempo calms down. Beware of overfeeding as the feed demand by the fish decreases. As business people we should constantly be asking how we can stay ahead of the game. In the case of a tilapia farmer using earth ponds in temperate southern Africa there are several things you can do.
One option is to house the breeders indoors under constant conditions of light and temperature to obtain year round spawning. When spring comes and the pond water temperatures increase, you can immediately stock fish into your ponds, rather than waiting until the breeders naturally commence with spawning and four weeks later stocking only starts.
During the summer months you then also have additional ponds free for rearing fish rather than holding breeders. Another option is to move the entire operation indoors to optimise temperatures throughout the year through appropriate insulation and heating. This will generally only be viable if the outdoor conditions do not allow for optimal growth for several consecutive months.
